The lion hunt was a ritual symbol of royal power in the Assyrian Empire. Ashurbanipal, the last great ruler, presented himself as the conqueror of chaos – an image that continues to fascinate to this day. The motif comes from the North Palace of Nineveh (c. 645–635 BC).
